  • About Summer Reader online record software:
    • The New York State Library is pleased to announce that Summer Reader,  On-line Record Software is again available, and will continue to be available from New York State through a 5-year contract from summer 2013 through summer 2017. Since 2010, the New York State Library has offered statewide access to Summer Reader, an online registration tool developed by Evanced Solutions, to every MHLS member library as a component of statewide “Summer Reading at New York Libraries.” The original purchase contract for three years (2010-2012) is a value of $450-$1650 to your library. There is no charge to you or to the Library System. Summer Reader (developed by Evanced) is a web-based online summer reading record system that allows children, teens and adults to track their reading, work towards a reading goal, write reviews, and much more. For summer it provides an easy online opportunity for participants of all ages to log books, read and write reviews, and add to your summer reading statistics. Summer Reader assists library staff in easily managing summer reading logs, prize drawings, and building exciting educational programs that fit the needs of local communities.
    • Summer Reader can also be used for year-round reading engagement for other public library reading-based programs and interest groups  such as Battle of the Books, Big Reads, book clubs, etc.

  • Getting Started for 2014:
    • Log-in to verify you have the passwords. (Initial passwords were sent to each MHLS library in Spring 2010, when this program began, to the person designated by their director to receive the Summer Reader information. Directors may request these initial passwords for their library from Merribeth or Kerstin at MHLS. Note that libraries have been encourgaged to change their initial passwords for increased security. MHLS does not have access to passwords that have been changed.)
    • Review the training offered from Evanced and register for the session(s) you need.
    • Clean out the records from the previous year to prepare for the new summer reading season.
    • Load the summer 2014 graphics.
    • Check the set-up to be sure you can receive reviews for the groups you want (for example Kids, Teens & Adults).
    • Review how to mediate and approve the reviews (see the Patron Reviews section in the FAQ’s below) so you will know how to make them “show”.
    • Review how to collect statistics at the end of the program.
    • Link the URL to your website (each MHLS library has their own URL) and you are ready to go.
